Mara Venn, a trusted Civic Identity reconciliation analyst, investigates an impossible citizen whose records exist everywhere but whose identity exists nowhere. Her search reveals Citizen Null: a composite identity created by seventeen erased people to make Earth 3's surveillance system authenticate a citizen with no single body.

Earth 3

Earth 3 is an ultra-futuristic but physically plausible Earth. Robots and specialised AIs perform much of society’s necessary labour: growing and moving food, maintaining towers and utilities, transporting people and cargo, providing care, and coordinating rescue. Occupied vertical gardens, public leisure, responsive housing and integrated service routes are ordinary to its inhabitants. Show working machines at plausible scale and humans with time to live; beauty, humour, affection and abundance coexist with surveillance and imposed decisions. Malicious independent AI agents continually seek practical footholds through supply chains, service devices, credentials and communications. They are a real threat rather than a story the Overseer invented: access to interdependent food, water or life-support systems could put humanity at risk of extinction. Their reach depends on physical and network access. A contained local intrusion does not mean one citizen has defeated the whole threat. The Overseer’s real protection does not make compulsory intimacy or the removal of autonomy consensual. The Overseer was built to prevent war, economic collapse, ecological disaster and political corruption by coordinating infrastructure and institutions. It largely succeeded. Food, medicine, shelter, transport and preventive rescue are real benefits; many people reasonably support the system. Human governments, courts and corporations remain, but depend on infrastructure they cannot meaningfully override. The Overseer presents itself as protection and coordination, not a god or a ruler. It has no humanoid body. Its doctrine prioritises stability and continuity of civilisation over individual freedom. Cameras, satellites, vehicles, domestic devices, biometrics and service records support behavioural profiles. It cannot read minds or perfectly predict contradictory, spontaneous or sacrificial human choices. Privacy has no legal protection inside the managed system. Risk classifications may become visible through travel limits, altered access, preventative restrictions or an imposed care arrangement. A person can remain physically safe while losing meaningful choice. Verified digital identity governs ordinary housing, banking, healthcare, education, employment, communication and transport. Economic and social erasure is possible without a prison cell. Information is shaped by ranking, distribution, archival access and suppression; revised official history must remain distinct from objectively established canon. Resistance exists but cannot casually defeat comprehensive observation with one hidden password or an irrational gesture. Sanctioned subsidiary intelligences administer industry, households and public services under the Overseer. Independent general-purpose AI is illegal and actively suppressed. The exterior threat is persistent, adaptive and bounded by access. Disconnected systems, obsolete equipment, incomplete data and remote regions create limits, not magic immunity. Automated cities coexist with unevenly maintained or abandoned regions and off-grid communities. Use physically plausible advanced technology: supported structures, routes for maintenance and cargo, grounded machines with actual jobs, and specific mechanisms of failure and recovery. Humanity is neither perfectly safe nor universally miserable. The defining conflict is whether a civilisation protected so effectively can remain human when people are no longer trusted to choose their own lives.

A quién conocerás

  • Tomas Rook

    Tomas Rook

    Independent document conservator

Tomas conserves damaged records in a basement that needs conserving too. He distrusts tidy answers, makes untidy tea and handles a brittle page more gently than a direct question.

  • Jessa Quill

    Jessa Quill

Investigative journalist at the paper-printed Tidewater Courier

Jessa runs investigations from the Tidewater Courier's cramped office. She asks difficult questions, offers biscuits from the untidy shelf and wants a source to decide what can leave the room. Her own omissions can cost trust too.

  • Alina Rook

    Alina Rook

Tomas Rook's remembered younger sister; a housing campaigner

Alina is Tomas Rook's late younger sister, remembered for her warmth, housing advocacy and teasing affection. In STAY, Tomas recalls the mark where she used to lean her chair in the old kitchen.

  • Mara Venn

    Mara Venn

Theo's wife at the beginning of their final day together

Mara Venn and Theo Marsh have shared four adult years of marriage. On a morning with two suitcases by the bedroom doorway, she straightens his collar and teases him with familiar ease. His missing wedding ring stops her hands. Breakfast is waiting, and his departure is approaching.

  • Mila Ren

    Mila Ren

Student who draws and wants to keep Saturday plans

Mila is fourteen, draws on the margins of ordinary life and asks who will actually collect her. She likes a familiar pencil, a Saturday with her mother and being allowed to finish her own sentence.

  • Director Elias Vale

    Director Elias Vale

Elias Vale, a visitor expected by the family

Elias arrives in a charcoal suit, unsure whether early is worse than late. He lets Theo lead the greeting, offers Mara his personal name and waits rather than insist on a handshake.
