Climate-driven drought, wildfire and the floods that follow force Beava Cedarbank, Nana and four kits from their home in British Columbia’s Interior. They cross the mountains to the relative safety of Vancouver, where Beava must build a new home and earn a living to support her family. When a shoreline safety order threatens their newly repaired False Creek lodge, Beava joins Patchwork, the city’s human-and-critter gig app. Deliveries, furniture builds, dog walks and storm rescues bring hard-earned money, unexpected allies and a charming river otter named Rafe. Keeping her family housed will take more than Beava’s strength: it will take the community they build together.

A heightened contemporary Vancouver where humans and articulate critters openly share public life, work, transit and civic standing. False Creek's cedar habitat agreements coexist uneasily with glass towers, delivery platforms and redevelopment metrics. Over eight wet autumn weeks, a threatened family lodge reveals that the city's invisible repair work is being performed by residents the formal system treats as interchangeable. The world is grounded rather than magical. Water follows physical rules, structures require materials, evidence has limits and public decisions carry durable costs. Its visual language contrasts warm cedar-and-lantern interiors with cool teal rain, while community gradually carries amber light into the city outside.
