When the Sky Remembers Our Names

by Smagik

An ocean hangs above Veyra, and every ninety-nine years one city is erased from memory to keep it there. This cycle has chosen Lume—the upward harbor whose forgotten foundations may prove the sacrifice was never necessary. Outlaw namewright Nara Quill hears her own stolen childhood inside the Covenant Engine. With a deserter captain, a furious young cartographer, a compromised memory monk, an admiral on the edge of mutiny, and an ancient leviathan, she has seven days to assemble a promise no throne can own. Your choices decide how dangerous truth travels, who is protected first, which promises Nara will accept from Talan, whether Cael and Ysra rebuild trust through testimony or rescue, and who holds the rewritten Covenant. Twelve endings combine four ways to save Veyra with three forms of custody—and every path opens a horizon where a living city beyond the mapped Skysea remembers Nara's lost brother.

Read excerpt

Nara came back to Lume by the low road, where nobody expected an outlaw and the houses still remembered which way was down. At the first market terrace, a woman was trying to catch rain in an upside-down basin. The water climbed past her fingers. Don't catch it. Cover the name above your door. Cloth first, oil over the cloth. If you paint straight onto wet stone it'll come away with the water. Is that yours? The stool? Borrowed. The door? Number seventeen, Coppersmith Steps, five people and a cat that hasn't paid rent in eleven years. I'm writing it on the back. Good. Let them hold it. Miri!…

The Skysea

Veyra lies beneath an ocean held in the sky by nine colossal gravity anchors. Its lower surface glows blue above mountain republics, caldera cities, glass deserts, and stormroot bridges. Ships sail upside-down along that luminous ceiling while localized skyfalls nourish forests or scour valleys when an anchor field slips. Leviathans carry drifting reefs through the upper depths, older than the human nations that chart them. Every ninety-nine years the Covenant Engine stabilizes the Skysea by removing one city's civic name and shared memory from the world. Its people may evacuate, but maps blur, records empty, and even loved ones struggle to recall what was lost. The empire calls this the price of survival. Hidden beneath that doctrine is an older world of many-handed witness, living infrastructure, and promises no single throne was meant to own.
